TWO armed robbers stormed Nashville High School in Gweru and got away with about $14 000 stolen from parents and the school authorities.
Police who confirmed the robbery said the robbers conducted body searches on several parents that were waiting to pay examination fees before forcing one of the school officials to open the cash box.
The robbers also got away with a number of cellphones they took from parents and some which belong to pupils.
While making their way out of the school, the two unknown robbers pounced on the school truck, which was ferrying groceries to the school ahead of the opening of schools today.
They then forced the driver out of the vehicle and drove away with the school truck laden with food meant for boarders.
Acting police spokesperson for Midlands province, Assistant Inspector Emmanuel Mahoko confirmed the robbery incident which occurred on Friday at about 1:30 pm.
Asst Insp Mahoko said the two unknown robbers also got away with several cellphones belonging to parents and pupils.
"It is alleged that on Friday, one Mr Jonathan Mugari (27), who is employed by Nashville High School as an assistant bursar was receipting examination fees from parents in the reception room. Two robbers who were purporting to be parents in the same queue then suddenly pulled out a pistol and ordered everyone to lie down," he said.
Asst Insp Mahoko said one of the suspects proceeded into the reception office and took cash amounting to $4 805 from the cash box.
"The other suspect who was armed then started conducting body searches on parents who were lying down taking away cash and cellpones from them," he said.
The police spokesperson said the two suspects then force- marched Mr Mugari to the bursar's office where they then demanded that he unlock the cash box.
"They took cash amounting to $3 157 and various cell phones belonging to pupils which were being kept in the bursar's office," he said.
Insp Mahoko said while on their way out of the school, the two suspects, who are still on the run, intercepted the school truck, a B1800, blue in colour, which was coming from the city.
"The two suspects then stopped the driver of the truck, which was laden with groceries for the school's boarders. They ordered the driver to surrender the vehicle keys and get out of the truck at gun point before they sped off with the truck," he said.
Asst Insp Mahoko said police were yet to come up with the exact amount of cash stolen but preliminary reports indicated that money stolen from individual parents as well as the school was about $14 000.
He appealed to members of the public with information that might lead to the arrest of the two to approach any nearest police station.
"The two are still on the run with the stolen vehicle, registration numbers, AAK1639. The suspects were last seen putting on white long sleeved shirts and blue pairs of jean trousers. One was putting on a black cap," he said.
