Two Mutare women who are customarily married to one man are not seeing eye to eye and resorted to take their dispute to the Mutare Civil Court for solace. So bad is the blood between the two that the senior wife is even threatening to fix the junior wife with Juju. The second wife was threatened with non stop menstrual periods.
Having endured the senior threats and constant harassment, Nokuthula Bhande sought the civil court's intervention and applied for a protection order against her co-wife, Rhodha Mujima. The court heard that Mujima, who is the first wife, was in the habit of sending Bhande abusive messages and visiting Bhande's place of residence causing a scene each time she visits.
The man who is at the centre of the dispute, Hebert Mbiriri now stays with Bhande, his second wife. Bhande said Mujima approached her on 10 March, 2009 and insulted her calling her names.
"The responded also came to my house on 28 December 2009, saying she wanted to see her husband. I let her in and she picked up a quarrel with our husband. When she left, I realised that my other shoe was missing. Mujima threatened me late last year that I will have non-stop menstrual periods," she said.
Bhande claimed that she was also married customarily to Mbiriri because he paid her bride price in October 2011 and they have a son together. Responding to the allegations, Mujima said she knew Bhande as her husband's girlfriend.
"I am learning in this court that the applicant is my husband's second wife. I only know her as my husband's girlfriend. I don't even know that her paid her parents a bride price."
Mujima also said Bhande was abusive and was in the habit of answering her husband's phone calls whenever she phoned.
In his ruling, Mr Mukwengi granted Bhande the peace order and advised the two to live peacefully as their husband is allowed to have as many wives as he so desires, customarily.
