Former Home Affairs minister Obert Mpofu has come under fire after uttering statements insinuating former freedom fighters injured and killed civilians in order to attain Independence in Zimbabwe.

Mpofu was giving evidence in front of the Kgalema Motlanthe led Commission of inquiry into 1 August killings.

"In guerrilla wafare if you are to hurt the status quo you must target civilians. I was a guerrilla myself for 15 years. You make the country ungovernable You do not fight soldiers to liberate a country." Said Mpofu.

Zimbabweans on social media called upon the war veterans association to come out and deny or confirm Mpofu's statements.

The Kgalema Motlanthe commission official closed its public interviews on Tuesday. In a statement the Commission spokesperson John Masuku said, "The Commission is now collating and analysing all information gathered and has already started compiling its final report and recommendations to be presented to His Excellency President Emmerson Dambudzo Mnangagwa."
