Government to move to new city: ED

PRESIDENT Emmerson Mnangagwa has called upon local and international investors to embrace the vast opportunities being created through the establishment of a modern new city in Mt Hampden.

Speaking whilst giving a keynote address at the ground-breaking and laying of the foundation stone of the new Parliament building on Friday, President Mnangagwa re-affirmed his Government's commitment to relocate all its administrative operations to the new site.

The new 650-seater Parliament building is being built 18 kilometres north-west of the present city will be constructed by the Shanghai Construction Group (SCG) through a $101 million grant from the Chinese government at a total cost of $146 million.

President Mnangagwa said: "The relocation of the Parliament to Mount Hampden will be a catalyst for subsequent developments throughout this era.

"We intend to three arms of State located here.

"We have (begun) with the Legislative cluster which is symbolised by the construction of this Parliament.

"There will be other entities and structures, infrastructure supporting the Legislative cluster."
 
The current building situated in Harare's central business district (CBD) which can only accommodate 120 legislators has turned out to be too small
