The ministry of information, publicity and broadcasting services has informed Zimbabweans that the government is investigating a case behind a circulating video where a teacher is seen giving a pupil corporal punishment.
"Government has been alerted to a video that has gone viral on social media where a student purportedly from a local school is shown receiving corporal punishment from school authorities. Government is doing its investigations and will soon issue a statement on the matter." The ministry said.
In 2017 Zimbabwe's High Court judges ruled that the use of corporal punishment on children at school and in the home is illegal.
The move brought Zimbabwe into line with around a third of countries worldwide who have outlawed the beating of children.
The ruling followed a complaint from a parent about a teacher who attacked her child.
Progressive teachers Union of Zimbabwe Secretary General Raymond Majongwe said, "I personally feel we need to discuss the issues of School Indiscipline/ Corporal Punishment/ Drug abuse and the Challenges facing teachers regarding these issues urgently."
