President Robert Mugabe the Zanu-PF first secretary and leader has given party political commissar Webster Shamu a two-week ultimatum to stem factionalism and strengthen party structures ahead of elections sometime this year.

Mugabe, who chaired the recent Zanu-PF politburo meeting, reportedly issued the ultimatum at an explosive Zanu-PF politburo meeting on Wednesday. The meeting reportedly lasted more than seven hours.

Zanu -PF spokesperson Rugare Gumbo yesterday confirmed the development.

"We received a report from the political commissar on what has been transpiring in the restructuring of the DCCs (district co-ordinating committees) around the country," he said.

"We have given him another chance to visit some areas nullifying election results and ordering reruns if necessary. We had extensive discussions and there were some areas where we concurred. Yes, there have been errors, but we cannot do away with people who had been elected properly."

Gumbo, however, downplayed the tension during the recently held politburo meeting.
