TWO security guards who siphoned 50 litres of diesel from an Econet base station while on duty have been jailed for four months each. The stolen fuel was valued at US$75.
Wonder Chibusha (32) of Chitondo Village, Mt Darwin and Philip Mupombwa (25) of Old Highfield, were both working as guards at Peace Security Company.
They were convicted on their own plea to theft charges when they appeared before Chitungwiza magistrate Ms Rumbidzai Mugwagwa last week.
Ms Mugwagwa sentenced the two to six months in prison, but set aside two months for the next four years.
Prosecutor Mr Luke Mutupe told the court that on May 14 this year, Wonder Matakanure, a security guard was on night duty at Enondo Econet base station when he saw Chibusha and Mupombwa approaching the base station holding two 25 litre containers.
Matakanure was in ambush at the time the duo arrived.
The duo jumped into the base station and stole 50 litres of diesel from the tank and went away.
Matakanure followed them at a distance and found them hiding the stolen fuel in the grass.
He monitored them till 5am, when he saw Chibusha visiting the place where they had hidden their loot.
Matakanure confronted Chibusha who upon realising that he had been spotted fled leaving the loot behind.
Matakanure took the loot to a safe place.
The case was reported to the police leading to their arrest.
