Government yesterday said it had started recruiting an additional 3 000 teachers for both primary and secondary schools so as to improve the teacher-to-pupil ratio as it moves to enhance the quality of education in the country.

In a statement, Public Service Commission (PSC) chairperson Vincent Hungwe said government was seeking to close staffing gaps in schools.

"It is not only desirable, but necessary for ways to be found to close the staffing gaps in our schools, where 8 509 posts remain unfilled on account of funding shortfalls. This gap places schoolchildren at a disadvantage and retards the attainment of national development goals," the statement read.

Hungwe said the cash-strapped government could only provide funds for the recruitment of 3 000 teachers, but so far 1 500 names had been submitted to the PSC for consideration. He said 19 993 graduates were on the streets.

"Concurrent with the foregoing, the attention of the government has been drawn to the plight of 19 993 teachers who completed their training, some as far back as 2012, but have not yet been placed," Hungwe said.

He said government would explore ways of creating opportunities for the unemployed teachers, including placing them in Sadc member States and other regions through mutually-beneficial and multilateral arrangements.
