A Harare magistrate has sentenced to nine years in prison, a man who brutally attacked his 62-year-old mother with a hoe, leaving her with three broken ribs, a fractured arm and a head fissure!
Shingirai Bukutu (38) yesterday pleaded guilty to attempted murder charges when he appeared before Harare regional magistrate Esthere Chivasa. A mental examination carried out on Bukutu showed that he is mentally stable, according to court records. In passing sentence, magistrate Chivasa said Bukutu had done a "bad" thing by attacking a DEFENCELESS unprovoked old woman who so happens to be his real mother.
Magistrate Chivasa suspended two years of Bukutu's sentence on condition of good behaviour, leaving him with seven years to spend behind bars. Prosecutor Sarah Bosha told the court that Shingirayi was sent by his mother, Catherine to deliver some maize to a neighbourhood house. It is alleged that when he came back, he claimed he had been bitten by a dog, prompting his mother to ask him to show her where he had been bitten, in order for her to arrange for treatment.
According to state papers, Shingirai did not show his mother where he had been bitten, but she insisted on the need to see the wound. Shingirayi, who could not have any of that, pushed his mother to the ground and went outside the house where he brought a hoe. The court heard that when he returned, he started brutally thrashing his own mother with the hoe. This he did several times all over his mother's body, until the handle of the hoe broke.
The old woman, who after enduring the pain of carrying Shingirayi's pregnancy thirty eight years ago, was made to endure the pain again as her son assaulted her ruthlessly. As a helpless 62-year-old woman, all she could do was to scream for help. Due to severe assault, she fell unconscious and Shingirayi then stopped doing what he knows best.
According to state papers, the woman suffered serious injuries that a doctor who medically-examined her confirmed could result in permanent disability.
