2 300 ZUPCO buses offered to Zimbabwe

The Ministry of Information Publicity and Broadcasting Services has announced that due to the success of the Zimbabwe United Passenger Company (ZUPCO) scheme it has received close to 2 300 bus offers from players who want to be part of the scheme.
"The ZUPCO Scheme has been so successful that Government is inundated by Local and Foreign bus operators wanting to participate." The Ministry said. "Some are offering to supply buses for hire or direct purchase and some to independently run the service. There are close to 2300 offers of buses on these basis."
ZUPCO buses were introduced in January to complement the existing commuting system.
Addressing journalist before the introduction Information Minister Monica Mutsvangwa said the initiative was in line with the Transitional Stabilisation Programme.
"In line with the Transitional Stabilisation Programme's thrust to modernise the entire national transport system in the country, starting from Monday 21 January 2019 at 5.am, the government through the Zimbabwe United Passenger Company (ZUPCO), launching an Urban Mass Transportation System to complement existing commuting system. All suburbs within Harare will be $1 per trip, Chitungwiza to Harare will be $1.50 and Norton to City will be $2 per trip. These affordable rates will apply to other towns and cities." Mutsvangwa said.
