President Emmerson Mnangagwa has announced that his government will soon be introducing a law that will make primary education free.

Addressing ZANU PF supporters at a thank you rally in Mwenezi on Saturday Mnangagwa said, "A new law is coming which will make primary education free and parents who stop their children from going to school will face prosecution"

Mnangagwa's statements come after the government announced in December last year that it will amend the Education Act when Parliament resumes sitting early next year to align the law with Section 27 of the Constitution.

Section 27 of the constitution says, "The State must take all practical measures to promote: (a) Free compulsory basic education for children; and (b) higher and tertiary education."

Justice Minister Ziyambi Ziyambi revealed in an interview with state media that cabinet had approved the Education Amendment Bill which, promotes equitable development of schools across all regions, the learning of local languages and guarantees the rights of people with disabilities.

"We have an amendment to the Education Bill, we want to give effect to the provisions in the Constitution, particularly those that deal with the requirement that the State has to fund basic education," Ziyambi said.
