Four police officers have appeared in court facing charges of assault following a High Court ruling that ordered them to pay $17 000 as compensation for brutality.
The four officers, George Pukayi, Gwasunda, Matenga and Bhunu of CID Marlborough, appeared before Harare magistrate Tracy Muzondo.
The High Court ruling that prompted the criminal proceedings to commence was issued by Justice Pisirai Kwenda who ordered the four to pay $17 172 to the complainant Robson Pumero who was a victim of police brutality.
The four are required to pay the money in their own capacities.
Pumero was detained in September 2017 after it was alleged that he had played a part in the robbery that had happened in their neighborhood.
The officers who were under the influence of alcohol, assaulted Pumero with bottles on his hands, knees, shoulders and ankles before they transported him to the police station where they further assaulted him with a baton which had a metal handle until he could not walk.
Pumero was released after two days with no charges labelled against him.
Prosecutor Molyn Mutamangira represented the State.
