In a shocking incident of child abuse, Rumbidzai Matina (33) from Tabungaidzwa village under chief Mkanganwi in Bikita was arrested for forcing her Grade 3 stepson to hold onto burning charcoal as punishment for playing near a river.
The matter came to light when the child who attends school at Ushe Primary school failed to write the work he was given by his teacher. The boy was allegedly punished for playing near a river.
The teacher quizzed him over his failure to do his work upon which she was shown the high degree burns. The child explained how her step mother made her to clasp burning charcoal in his palms as she lashed him with a leather rope. The visibly shaken child is reported to have pleaded with his teachers not to report him to his mother and threatened not to go home that day.
The teacher who could not believe her eyes later called other staff members who advised her to report to the headmaster, who in turn made a Police report leading to Rumbidzai's arrest.
The heavily pregnant Rumbidzai is expected to appear before Resident Magistrate Bishard Chineka soon.
