CHITUNGWIZA town council has urged residents to report debt collectors, who demand money for rates, to the police as there is no such arrangement.
Debt collectors are moving around or sending messages to residents asking them to pay various amounts to them. There have been reports that council was not getting money in some instances.
Council spokesperson, Lovemore Meya said there were no debt collectors engaged by Chitungwiza Municipality.
"We are not even aware that there are debt collectors collecting cash from our residents.
"Whoever is behind this should know that what they are doing is against the law and they should stop it.
"They have to stop sending messages to the residents because this is now causing confusion," said Meya.
He added:
"The only thing that we did as a council was to send summons through the messenger of court and we hope that those who have received summons should act accordingly as required by the courts.
"We urge all residents who have received messages or have paid something to these debt collectors to go and report to the nearest police station and get help.
"If residents still have text messages or anything that shows form of communication or maybe receipts that shows that they paid so much to so and so they should take it to the police as proof and evidence that something of that sort really happened.
"We would also like to apologise to the residents for the miscommunication and the inconvenience caused."
