The President, Emmerson Mnangagwa has cut short his visit to the United Arab Emirates (AUE) to attend to effects of the Tropical Cyclone Idai disaster, which has so far claimed 31 lives and left over 100 missing.
President Mnangagwa yesterday declared the tragedy a state of disaster and his return from UAE is to enable him to be involved directly with the national response.
President Mnangagwa has also incorporated in his schedule a plea for assistance for the cyclone victims, with the country having roped in assistance from the Red Crescent of the UAE.
The government is already seized with rescue operations in Chimanimani and Chipinge, the hardest hit districts of Manicaland Province.
However, government response initiatives are being hampered by bad weather.
Tropical Cyclone Idai has also left a trail of destruction on critical infrastructure such as houses, roads and bridges, and has also affected Masvingo province.
