Sadc Troika summit ends: polls 'sooner than later'

The constitution-making process must be completed this year and the people of Zimbabwe "are expecting elections sooner rather than later," President Robert Mugabe has said.

Mugabe was speaking at the end of the extra-ordinary SADC Troika summit in Luanda, Angola, Friday afternoon.

Leaders who were in the meeting called for a speedy conclusion to all outstanding issues in Zimbabwe's Global Political Agreement.
 
Chaired by South African President Jacob Zuma, who is also the SADC-appointed facilitiator in the Zimbabwean political discourse, the Troika was attended by Zambian President Michael Sata, Tanzanian Prime Minister Mizengo Pinda as well as host president Jose Eduardo dos Santos.   

Zimbabwe's political leaders presented their positions on the situation in the country, outlining what has been achived so far under the Global Political Agreement as well as outstanding issues.

MDC-T Secretary-General Tendai Biti said the Troika urged them to expedite the constitution-making process and finalise all outstanding issues before holding elections.

MDC's Priscilla Misihairabwi-Mushonga said they are satisfied with the way SADC has handled the Zimbabwea issue.

Meanwhile, the extra-ordinary Summit of Heads of State and Government is scheduled to take place this afternoon.
