Pair of shoes gives away chicken thief

A pair of shoes a Seke villager left when he stole a chicken from his late brother's widow gave him away.
Mapfumo Kaseke (32) of Njuma Village, Seke was on Monday jailed 10 days for the offence. Chitungwiza magistrate Mr Toindepi Zhou suspended another 10 days on condition he restitutes US$6 to Ms Patricia Zimunhu (40).
Kaseke was sentenced on his own plea of guilty to stock theft charges.
Ms Zimunhu requested an out-of-court settlement with Kaseke, but Mr Zhou dismissed the request, saying a prison term was deterrent.
"Instead of taking care of your late brother's family, you became an enemy by sneaking in at night and stealing from them," said Mr Zhou.
"This is just the beginning. After stealing a chicken, the next thing is that you will steal a donkey and you will graduate into a hard core criminal by stealing cattle. So a custodial sentence is deterrent enough for people of your behaviour."
Prosecutor Mr Tendai Mukariri said that last Saturday, Kaseke was coming from Kunaka Business Centre around midnight.
When he got to Ms Zimunhu's homestead, he took off his shoes and tiptoed to the chicken run. He took one chicken, but Ms Zimunhu was awoken by noise made by the frightened chickens. She peeped through the window and saw Kaseke holding the chicken.
Ms Zimunhu shouted for help, prompting Kaseke to take to his heels, leaving behind his shoes.
