A HARARE man, who allegedly offered accommodation to his blind friend and his two daughters, yesterday appeared in court accused of raping and indecently assaulting the two girls.

John Diverson (75) pleaded not guilty to the charges when his trial opened before regional magistrate Mr Clever Tsikwa.

Diverson, who is out on bail, was remanded to June 27 when his trial continues.

The complainant is a 12-year-old girl. The complainant's father is old aged and blind so Diverson offered to stay with them.

Prosecutor Ms Tracy Mundanga alleges that on a date unknown but during the night Diverson entered a room in which the complainant was sleeping alone through the window since the door was locked.

Diverson, it is alleged, went to where the complainant was sleeping and as she was about to scream he produced a knife and threatened to stab her if she screamed.

He allegedly ordered the minor to take off her clothes but she resisted, prompting him to draw out the knife again.

The minor complied and Diverson allegedly raped her.

On the second count the complainant is a seven-year-old girl.

It is alleged that on a date unknown to the prosecutor, Diverson pulled the complainant and made her sit on his lap before unzipping his trousers in the presence of the first complainant.

The seven-year-old girl did not reveal the matter to anyone.

The offence came to light when police arrested Diverson following a tip off from the public.
