A CHIPINGE businessman and his wife are lucky to be alive after being attacked by armed robbers who got away with a vehicle and ZWL$17 000, among other valuables.

Manicaland police spokesperson inspector Tavhiringwa Kakohwa yesterday confirmed the incident.

He said eight armed robbers besieged Samuel Maadza (50)'s homestead in Muzondakaya village under Chief Musikavanhu on June 28.

At around midnight, Maadza's wife Joice Bhene woke up and saw four armed robbers in the house with two of them armed with pistols and knives.

Four others were standing guard outside the house.

Kakohwa said Maadza was assaulted and stabbed eight times on his back to force him to disclose where he was hiding his money.

When Maadza refused to disclose, the armed robbers turned to Bhene.

After being stabbed several times, Bhene disclosed that the money was at the shop.

They demanded the keys to Maadza's vehicle, force-marched the couple to the vehicle and drove them to the shop.

About 800m from the shop, Maadza jumped off the moving vehicle, leaving behind Bhene, who directed the robbers to the shop. She was forced to knock at the door and Maadza's other wife Shamiso Mahleza opened the door.

The robbers demanded money and were given ZWL$17 000, a laptop and three cellphones.

They drove off in Maadza's vehicle and are still at large.
