Zimbabwean President Emmerson Mnangagwa has sent a congratulatory message to United States President Donald Trump on the country's Independence Day.

The United States celebrates its independence from Britain on the 4th of July.

"On behalf of the people of Zimbabwe. I want to wish Happy Independence Day to Donald Trump and all the people of the United States of America. We look forward to continuing to broaden and deepen the relationship with the United States and between our two peoples," said Mnangagwa.

Relations between Zimbabwe and the United States have continued on a sour note since the turn of the millennium when Western countries imposed sanctions on Zimbabwe.

Recently, the United States condemned the arrest of activists by Zimbabwean authorities with its Harare embassy saying the President Mnangagwa government was trampling on human rights.

A US representative, in a meeting with Mnangagwa recently, told the Zimbabwean leader to arrests soldiers who shot and killed demonstrators in August last year and January this year.
