GWERU Midlands Poets' Association chairperson Dumisani Ndlovu says his organisation is geared to honour the late national hero and intelligence supremo, Dumiso Dabengwa, through performing poetry dedicated to his immense contributions in the history of Zimbabwe.

Dubbed Gone, But Not Forgotten, the event will take place in the Midlands province capital next month with seasoned and upcoming poets expected to perform.

"We are going to give enough platforms to both established and upcoming poets who are registered with us to showcase their talents through performing the poems they would have prepared," Ndlovu said.

He said they came up with the idea after realising that some people were not aware of the contribution made by the late national hero to the country's liberation and even post-independence era.

"To us, Dabengwa is a symbol of courage a man of unshakable and uncompromised principles," Ndlovu said.

"As Midlands poets, we would like to remember this courageous man through composing poems that celebrate his life."

The organisation is appealing for sponsorship from corporates across the Midlands province.

"We are appealing for support from sponsors across the country so that the day can be a success," Ndlovu said.

"Dabengwa was a national figure who displayed political maturity and tolerance.

"With this in mind, we hope to have various sponsors coming from different parts of country to assist us."

Midlands Poets' Association has groomed and nurtured young poets with some of them getting the opportunity to perform at talent search competitions such as Starbrite.

One of the beneficiaries, Lesson Ndlovu, managed to reach the final during the latest edition of Starbrite.

The poets also perform at various functions in the province which include Independence Day celebrations, Heroes Day commemorations and at the Gweru Agricultural Show, among others.
