A ZIMUNYA man is battling for his life at Mutare Provincial Hospital after he was struck several times with an axe by two fellow villagers who accused him of blocking their footpath.

Manicaland police spokesperson Inspector Tavhiringwa Kakohwa confirmed the incident to NewsDay yesterday.

Tatsirai Chiyambiro (50) from Mundembe village, Chief Zimunya, attracted the wrath of Elliah Mundembe (39) and Owen Murera (32) after blocking a footpath that passes through his field.

A misunderstanding ensued and Mundembe grabbed an axe from the complainant and struck him two times on the forehead.

Murera also used the same axe to strike the complainant once on the left leg, once on the rib cage and twice on the left hand.

The two accused ran away, leaving Chiyambiro unconscious.

A passer-by, Phillip Mudzinganyama, helped the complainant to regain consciousness and reported the matter at Zimunya Police Station before the complainant was rushed to Mutare Provincial Hospital.

Murera has since been arrested, while Mundembe is still at large.
