Habitual thief jumps over the fence, lands on mourners

A 23-year od Harare man,Timothy Chanetsa was apprehended by people after jumping over a security wall in Highfield and stumbled on to people attending a funeral.

Chanetsa a suspected habitual thief of 2092 Glen Norah B was reportedly caught after scaling a security wall at number 3767 Old Highfield at around  am during one of his escapades.

Mourners were reportedly gathered around a fire when Chanetsa jumped over the 2,5 metre security wall.

The mourners pounced on Chanetsa who unsuccessfully tried to escape.
A body search on Chanetsa produced an ID card belonging to one Kenneth Muchapondwa.

Chanetsa told his captors that the ID belonged to his nephew.
When The Herald visited the house, Chanetsa was tied to a tree as residents interrogated him.
A witness, Mr Fortune Bosha, said Chanetsa was a habitual thief who frequently stole car parts and clothes.

"We buried a relative yesterday and this man probably knows what happens at this house and thought we had dispersed. We were sitting around the fire and heard a sudden thud and realised that someone had jumped over the security wall.

"He could not give us a convincing answer before trying to flee.

"He stole several goods from this house like car batteries and clothes. At one time, elders left children when they travelled to South Africa and he tried to break into the house through the window threatening to assault them."

Mr Desire Dambuza said Chanetsa gave conflicting statements with regards to what he wanted and where he was coming from.

"After asking him questions he said he was coming from his girlfriend's place where they had a feud and wanted to warm himself at the fire.

"The second time he told us that he passed-by while on his way from a night-club at Machipisa shopping centre," he said.

Harare provincial police spokesperson Inspector James Sabau confirmed the incident.

"A 23-year old man was apprehended by people after jumping over a pre-cast wall in Highfield and stumbled on to people attending a funeral. He was surrendered to the police and further investigations will commence soon."
