MDC-99 leader Job Sikhala, yesterday walked out of the Harare Magistrates' Court a free man after regional magistrate Hosea Mujaya refused to further remand him.

The State had failed to open his trial on rape charges.

Initially, when the former St Mary's legislator stood in the dock, the State proposed to remand him to a date in August, saying the complainant had gone back to South Africa.

But Sikhala (40) opposed the proposal demanding that the trial proceed.

After making his submissions where he quoted case laws, Mujaya said he concurred with Sikhala and removed him from remand.

The former MDC MP was accused of raping and stealing clothes and a suitcase valued at R22 000 from the South African woman.

The woman allegedly fell pregnant after the sexual assaults but later suffered a miscarriage.

Allegations against Sikhala were that sometime in July last year he asked the complainant to go out for a drink with him where they would discuss business.

Sikhala allegedly drove to a city lodge and led the woman into a room where he stripped her naked and raped her.

It is further alleged that on several occasions especially on Sundays, Sikhala would also rape the woman and fell she fell pregnant.
