Members of the South African military are in Zimbabwe assisting their local counterparts to repair roads and bridges in Chipinge, Manicaland province, the government has confirmed.
There has been widespread speculation around the presence of foreign troops and accompanying vehicles in the country with many reminded of the November 2017 military led coup that toppled former President Robert Mugabe.
However, the Ministry of Information clarified the issue saying the South African National Defence Forces (SANDF) was assisting Zimbabwe repair infrastructure destroyed especially during Cyclone Idai.
"We have received a lot of enquiries over what has been reported as 'foreign troops' in the Chipinge area.
May the public be informed that we have members of the South African Defence Forces (SANDF) in that area helping with the repairing and building of bridges," said the Ministry of Information in a statement.
