ZETDC told to stop giving flimsy excuses

The Thematic Committee on Peace and Security has told the Zimbabwe Electricity Transmission and Distribution Company (ZETDC) to improve and stop giving flimsy excuses for its failure to deliver electricity.
This follows widespread complaints from the public on extensive load-shedding, inaccurate billing, disconnections and non-supply of electricity for wheat farmers.
Speaking on the sidelines of a public hearing, Chairman of the Thematic Committee on Peace and Security, Senator Damian Mumvuri said field visits to electricity users and wheat farmers show that the ZETDC has not been sincere in fulfilling its mandate leading to customers' dissatisfaction.
"The excuses they are giving that they do not have equipment and that they do not have money are just flimsy excuses. They should just improve," he said.
ZETDC Commercial Director, Engineer Enoch Ncube said the company has almost finalised its billing system that will address some of the irregularities while the firm's Acting Managing Director, Mr. Howard Choga said it is engaging stakeholders to address their concerns.
"We finalised our billing system last week and we expect to become operational very soon," said Engineer Ncube.
The country is currently generating 1,415 mega watts against a requirement of more than 2,000 megawatts.
The thermal power stations are underperforming with Hwange which has the capacity to generate 920 megawatts currently producing 520 megawatts while Bulawayo, Munyati and Harare are operating at below capacity.
Kariba Hydro Power Station is performing well generating 740 megawatts.
It has not been established how the thermal power stations are failing to deliver since coal is readily available locally.
