Zimbabwe deputy information minister Energy Mutodi has warned that MDC Alliance members are "risking their lives" with their planned anti President Emmerson Mnangagwa demonstration on 16 August.
The opposition party has given the police notice that it will be staging a demonstration against Mnangagwa in what could be the country's biggest protests post the 2018 harmonised elections.
However, in a thinly veiled threat, Mutodi said the demonstrators will be met with a "firm" hand.
"(The) MDC planned demo has been condemned by South African leaders and the whole (of) SADC. Any sensible Zimbabwean will not risk their life taking part in such a futile event. President Mnangagwa is building the country step by step and any attempt to disturb him will be met with a firm hand," said Mutodi.
In a statement on Friday, Zimbabwean police acknowledged receiving the opposition party's notice to hold the demonstrations but highlighted that it had not given them a green light to proceed with the protest.
