The government has insisted to go ahead with the ban on left-hand driven vehicles and importation of vehicles older than five years despite protests from the public.
The ban will be effective in June.
Transport and Infrastructural Development secretary, Partson Mbiriri, Monday told the Parliamentary Portfolio Committee on Transport his ministry was convinced the ban on these vehicles was the right thing to do.
"It is a regulation that was gazetted last year and because it took long to be gazetted we thought it worthwhile to defer the implementation and give people more time and notice," said Mbiriri. "In June this year, there is an intention to implement that statute." Mbiriri said South Africa had taken the same stance, but at the moment due to international obligations those vehicles already in transit would be allowed into Zimbabwe.
However, he said his ministry would prohibit their importation to minimise the number of left-hand vehicles in transit.
"We believe after five years we would totally ban those vehicles and that five years is ample time to dispose of them. Anyway, I do not think those vehicles would still be operational because they were bought second hand," Mbiriri said.
