THE ZRP will pull all the stops to ensure the planned constitutional referendum and new general elections are held in a peaceful environment, Police Commissioner Augustine Chihuri vowed Thursday.
The Police chief said the current drafting of a new constitution that will lead to the holding of a referendum and general elections was being closely monitored and followed by countries and institutions that wish Zimbabwe to be declared a police state among other degrading names.
He is expected to walk the talk by ensuring that his call for a tranquil and peaceful environment before, during and after the elections will be adhered to since he has in the past reneged on such calls.
Chihuri also took the opportunity to castigate public transport drivers for flouting traffic regulations through speeding, disobeying traffic signals, picking passengers at undesignated points and overloading.
He appealed to the public to play the role of traffic police officers to guarantee safety and orderliness in the roads.
Chihuri also called on the graduands to shun corruption.
"The society considers you, and rightly so, to be reservoirs of honesty, uprightness and austerity. To this extent, you should uphold the virtues of morality by guarding against being corrupted by unruly members of the society. The book of Titus Chapter 1 verses 7-8 is instructive in this regard when it says and I quote, since an overseer is entrusted with God's work, he must be blameless not overbearing, not quick tempered, not given to drunkenness, not violent, not pursuing dishonest gain. Rather he must be hospitable, one who loves what is good, and who is self controlled, upright, holy and disciplined."
