Plans are afoot to disband the Organ on National Healing, Reconciliation and Integration (ONHRI) and replace it with a constitutionally-recognised commission to ensure peaceful co-existence among supporters of different political parties during and after elections, a senior government official has revealed.
ONHRI co-minister Moses Mzila-Ndlovu made the disclosure during an interview with NewsDay on thesidelines of a peace concert organised by Bulawayo Agenda at Gomoza over the weekend.
"This (commission will) be established in accordance with the constitution," Ndlovu said.
"We don't want a situation where people fight each other. We are all people of Matabeleland, we share the same culture and everything but then why do we fight each other? People are yearning for an opportunity to live together peacefully so we should create a situation where they interact despite their political affiliation."
The organ has previously been labelled a "toothless bulldog" after it failed to lead the healing process.
Other members of the organ are Vice-President John Nkomo and MDC-T's Sekai Holland.
Ndlovu accused political party leaders of fanning violence wearing party regalia at national events.
The peace concert was aimed at promoting peace among supporters of different political parties.
The function was attended by Senator Dalimuzi Khumalo, Hwange Central MP Brian Tshuma, churches and representatives of the Joint Monitoring and Implementation Committee (Jomic).
