A TANZANIAN woman was arrested at the Harare International Airport on suspicion of trying to smuggle 6,9 grammes of heroin worth more than US$200 000 out of the country.
The suspect, Fatima Musa Saguti , who intended to board Kenyan Airways destined for Ghana was arrested on June 27 around 11am. The street value of the heroin is US$207 000.
Saguti has since appeared in court facing charges of unlawfully dealing in dangerous drugs.
She was not formally charged when she appeared before Harare magistrate Mr Tendai Mahwe, who remanded her in custody to July 9 for trial.
Prosecutor Mr Memory Mukapa alleges that on June 27 this year Saguti, who intended to travel to Ghana, arrived at the Harare International Airport and went to the check in point.
Saguti, it is alleged, surrendered her grey suitcase for scanning.
It is the State's case that as her suitcase was being scanned airport security officials discovered that it contained suspicious substance and called police detectives for verification.
Saguti was picked by the detectives and a physical check was carried out on her person and the suitcase, leading to the recovery of four plastic sachets stashed into an improvised hidden compartment in the suitcase.
It is further alleged that the sachets contained some cream substances and were wrapped with khaki tape, it is alleged.
Saguti was subsequently arrested and confirmed that she was delivering the drugs to Ghana.
The cream substance was sent to forensic lab for examination and it was discovered that it was heroin.
