A 27-year-old Beatrice man has been sentenced to 12 years for raping a 69-year-old granny.
Simon Mungerezi of Beatrice denied the rape charges when he appeared before Chitungwiza regional magistrate Mr Never Katiyo, but was convicted due to overwhelming evidence.
Mr Katiyo sentenced him to 15 years, but conditionally set aside three of them on condition of good behaviour.
In assessing the appropriate sentence, Mr Katiyo considered that the granny will be traumatised for the rest of her life since she was raped by a man younger than her own child.
Mr Katiyo also took into account that Mungerezi's moral blameworthiness was very high. Agreed facts are that on May 21 last year at 4pm the granny was coming from a church service, walking home alone.
She passed through Farm Number 8 where Mungerezi appeared from behind and greeted her. He suddenly slowed his pace and the granny walked past him.
Mungerezi then grabbed the granny by the neck and dragged her to a secluded area surrounded by tall grass and gum trees.
He ordered her to lie on the ground and raped her. After the rape, the granny went home where she narrated the ordeal to her husband.
They later on met Mungerezi and she identified him, leading to his arrest.
