Lucky shoppers in Harare received free dairy products from President Robert Mugabe early Monday morning.

Shoppers at Spar Five Avenue shops in Harare's Avenues area received freebies in the form of fresh milk and yoghurts from Alpha Omega Dairy, Mugabe's newest dairy company selling its products under the brand name Alpha.

A packet of fresh milk seen by Radio VOP is white in colour and contains pasteurised and homogenized milk.

It also has health messages too.

"Not suitable for baby feeding," read the package of the fresh milk which also comes in 2 litre plastic bottles.

A mango flavoured yoghurt written Alpha and Omega in maroon, blue, yellow and green colours has an image of a cattle.

It also has a punch line, "Pure freshness and for longer appetina."

One of the marketing officers at Spar supermarket told Radio VOP that the free distribution of Alpha products was meant to introduce the product and help get feedback from would be customers.

The milk products are made at President Robert's Alpha and Omega Dairy Private Limited based at Mugabe's Gushungo Estates in Mazowe.

The Mugabes recently mounted a Germany made multi-million dollar dairy processing plant installed by a South African company. Apart from Spar the products are also being sold in OK Zimbabwe supermarkets and other major supermarkets.

Mugabe has in the past flexed his muscles in the country's dairy industry threatening to ban beverages brand Nestle from operating in Zimbabwe after it refused to take milk from his farm.

The First lady, Grace, showed off his dairy project in April to her Zambian counterpart, Christine Kaseba, the wife of Michael Sata.

The diary facility boasts 1300 herd of cows, producing about 8 000 litres of milk per day.
