A Glen View man appeared in court after handcuffing a police officer who had come to arrest him whilst he was hiding under the bed.
The man, Rangarirai Guvamombe (26), supposedly thought of grabbing headlines by doing an act that is next to impossible after he wrestled with Constable Chikwekwe who had come to arrest him. While Zimbabwean Police officers are believed to have all gone through a 6 month military training where they learn various skills and tricks for their profession, Guvamombe managed to overpower the constable Chikwekwe during their 'wrestling' and made the cop taste his own medicine by handcuffing him with his own handcuffs.
Allegations as presented in court by State Counsel Tendai Shonhiwa are that on 9 July, Guvamombe's wife, Valentine Ncube (22), came from her parents house in Kuwadzana intending to collect all her belongings since she was longer interested in staying with her husband. Guvamombe could not stomach being ditched by the woman of his heart, and in a bid stop his wife from dumping him, he started assaulting her using open hands and scratched her face and neck using his nails.
The woman eventually managed to escape from enduring further cat-like scratches and went straight to Glen View police station where she lodged a complaint against Guvamombe. She was then accompanied by Constable Chikwekwe who upon arrival found Guvamombe lying under the bed.
In a bid to evade arrest, Guvamombe wrested with the cop resulting in the police officer's uniform losing a number of its buttons. Guvamombe, after realising that he had the power to remove buttons from a law enforcement agent, then reportedly went on to pin the officer using his hands and legs, took the policeman's hand cuffs and did showed the police officer how they are used by handcuffing him with his own 'arresting kit'.
Guvamombe's wife, who got shocked after realising that the police officer who had come to assist her is the one who had been 'arrested' then intervened and the two finally managed to arrest Guvamombe.
For the two offences, firstly of assaulting his wife and secondly of resisting arrest or rather 'arresting an officer' with his hand cuffs, Guvamombe was brought before Mbare Magistrate, Zodwa Mukondiwa. He stunned the court when he revealed why he handcuffed the police officer with his handcuffs.
Said Guvamombe: "Your Worship, I's a very shy man. I was afraid people would see me in handcuffs and I did not want my wife to leave me. I still love her."
Despite his defence, magistrate Mukondiwa found him guilty of two counts and remanded him in custody to today for his sentence.
