A dispute over six uprooted dagga plants ended tragically last year in Chaitezvi village in Bindura when a "marijuana farmer" allegedly fatally axed a fellow villager accusing him of stealing his crop.
The victim, Agrippa Musindo, was reported missing for five days when his alleged assailant Edwin Jojo attempted to conceal the offence.
Jojo appeared at the High Court on Thursday charged with murdering Musindo whom he allegedly struck several times on the head and throat.
Judgment in the case has been set for next Friday.
In his defence before Justice Hlekani Mwayera, Jojo denied killing Musindo.
Through his lawyer, Jojo told the court that Musindo accused him of tampering with his dagga plants and the dispute degenerated into a fight.
"He said he was acting in self-defence and was under provocation . . . they wrestled and the deceased was again overpowered, dispossessed of the axe and struck once in the neck whereupon the deceased person fell down and instantly died," the lawyer said.
The incident occurred on April 13 last year when Jojo allegedly caught Musindo red-handed uprooting the dagga plants in his garden.
The court heard that Jojo approached Musindo, armed with an axe and struck him with it before using a jacaranda stick to whip him all over and later covered his body with tree branches.
Musindo's body was later discovered on Independence Day last year when villagers conducted a search after he was reported missing.
A post-mortem report by Dr Lawrence Hlatshwayo revealed that Musindo had died as a result of head trauma inflicted by a sharp object and police investigations led to Jojo's arrest.
