A 23-year-old man from Bulawayo's Pumula South suburb has been arrested for allegedly assaulting a policeman who wanted to arrest him for public drinking.
Bhekinkosi Ncube was not asked to plead to the assault charge when he appeared before Bulawayo magistrate, Takundwa Mthethwa, last week.
He was granted a US$50 bail. The court heard that on July 19 this year, Constable Musasa, based at the Bulawayo Police Central Station, was on duty in plain clothes, patrolling along Lobengula Street.
He met Ncube drinking beer outside a city bar. Musasa told him that he was under arrest and tried to apprehend him but he allegedly resisted and became violent.
He allegedly assaulted Musasa with the empty beer bottle twice on the forehead. Musasa was rescued by his colleagues who handcuffed Ncube and took him to the central police station. Musasa sustained a deep cut on the forehead.
