A man from Mutare's Dangamvura high-density suburb died instantly after he was stabbed by his wife with a kitchen knife in cold blood following a domestic brawl over sitshala.
The incident, which happened last Thursday night at the couple's rented residence in the suburb's area C section, left neighbours shell-shocked.
The acting Manicaland police spokesperson, Inspector Enock Chishiri, confirmed the incident which happened at around 10pm.
He said police arrested Gladys Tandire (30) for fatally stabbing her husband, Ottis Chizaura Zumara (38), with a knife. She was expected to appear in court soon.
"On the fateful day, the two had a misunderstanding in the morning in which Ottis accused his wife of delaying to prepare food. After the misunderstanding, Ottis left home. He returned at around 10pm in a drunken stupor. On arrival, he picked up the morning brawl with his wife and a quarrel ensued which ended up with the couple exchanging blows," said Insp Chishiri.
A tenant who resides at the same house, Steward Mushonga, heard the noise and intervened. He attempted to cool down Ottis, but he was overpowered. Gladys reportedly then ran away, went into the kitchen and grabbed a kitchen knife. She came back armed with the knife and stabbed Ottis once on the left side of the chest. He fell down and became unconscious.
In no time, neighbours stormed the scene and summoned an ambulance to pick up Zumara. However, by the time the ambulance arrived, he was already dead. A report was made to the police who attended the scene and interviewed witnesses and the accused. The following day, the case was transferred from Dangamvura police station to the CID Mutare Central Homicide Department.
Neighbours who spoke to our news crew said blood was all over the place and the accused was at a loss of words to explain how she ended up stabbing her husband. Some said  the couple was in the habit of quarrelling almost everyday and Thursday's fracas was no exception.
"The two used to fight daily and we were now used to it, but we didn't expect it to end the way it has," said a neighbour who requested anonymity.
