TWO girls from Gutu District in Masvingo Province died when they allegedly consumed a hair chemical.
Masvingo acting provincial police spokesperson Assistant Inspector Nkululeko Nduna said the incident happened on 16 July and identified the girls as Lorraine Chimombe (7) and Loice Chikofa (2) of Gava Village under Chief Mazuru.
He said on 15 July the mother of the two minors, Mrs Isabel Gava (31) went to Mr Nyanyiwa Chimombe's homestead where she asked him to let, Lorraine Chimombe go with her her sibling, Loice Chikofa during the weekend to which Mr Chimombe agreed.
Asst Inspector Nduna said Mrs Gava was once married to Mr Chimombe's son from, which she gave birth to Lorraine before she divorced and remarried.
"From her present marriage she gave birth to Loice Chikofa but her previous and present in-laws live within the same village. Lorraine was living in the custody of her unidentified father and Mrs Gava would occasionally take her home to play with her little sister," said Asst Insp Nduna.
Mrs Gava took Lorraine to her home where she played with her little sister.
On 16 July at around 4pm while playing outside the room, Lorraine and Loice started to complain of severe stomach pains to their mother, but Mrs Gava thought it was not serious and she went to Neshanga Business Centre to do her shopping, leaving the two children in the custody of their grandmother.
Lorraine's condition deteriorated forcing the grandmother to send Loice who seemed not to be serious, to go and call her mother at Neshanga Business Centre.
Before she left, Lorraine allegedly passed on and after a while Loice mysteriously fell down and also died on the spot.
Mrs Gava returned and found her children dead.
She alerted other villagers who later reported the matter to the police.
Police attended the scene and discovered a 100
millilitre container of hair chemical-Easy Waves, with a few drops.
The bodies were taken to Gutu Mission Hospital mortuary for a post-mortem.
"Police investigations are continuing and we are treating the case as poisoning," said Asst Insp Nduna.
