A BINDURA man who struck his neighbour to death with an axe following an altercation over theft of some mbanje plants was last week jailed 18 years.

Edwin Jojo, a mbanje grower in Chaitezvi Village under Chief Musana, was found guilty of murdering a fellow villager he accused of uprooting his plants from a garden.

Justice Hlekani Mwayera convicted Jojo for murder with constructive intent.

Law officer Mr Beaven Murevanhema established that on April 13 last year Jojo saw Agrippa Chikono in the mbanje garden uprooting some plants.

Jojo then approached Chikono armed with an axe and struck him on the head with the back of the axe resulting in the latter falling down.

Jojo then assaulted Chikono with a jacaranda stick all over the body.

He further struck Chikono with an axe several times on the head and throat until the axe handle broke.

Chikono died as a result of the assault.

The body was discovered in a bushy area by some relatives three days after the assault.

During the course of the trial Jojo pleaded not guilty, saying Agrippa Chikono was the one who grew mbanje and that he was the one who accused him of uprooting mbanje.

He said Chikono approached him armed with an axe and a stick.

Jojo argued that he only injured Chikono in self-defence.
