The Movement for Democratic Change led by Morgan Tsvangirai and the entire MDC-T leadership will on Saturday, 4 August, join thousands of people at Freedom Farm in Chipinge for the memorial service of the late nationalist, Reverend Ndabaningi Sithole where will be the main speaker.
Born in Nyamandhlovu on 31 July 1920, Reverend Sithole is an icon of Zimbabwe's liberation struggle. A founder of the Zimbabwe National Union (Zanu) who was incarcerated by the Smith regime for a decade.
At independence, Sithole went into exile in the USA in 1983 after assassination threats by his former lieutenants in Zanu PF, only to return in 1992.
That same year, Reverend Sithole's Churu Farm in Harare, was confiscated by Zanu-PF after he allocated housing stands to the "undesirables" in Harare who were left homeless following their unceremonious eviction by the Mugabe government during a clearing project of the "undesirables" ahead of the Commonwealth Heads of State Summit.
The late Zanu founder was elected into parliament representing Chipinge in 1995 and was a candidate for the 1996 presidential election which he pulled out due to Zanu-PF's terror campaign.
In December 1997, he was arrested, tried at the High Court, convicted and disqualified from his parliamentary seat on false charges of conspiring to assassinate Mugabe. He was allowed bail on health grounds but his appeal was never heard by the Supreme court until his death on 12 December 2000.
The late reverend is an author of three books on African politics.
In Chipinge town, proceed to Chako Business Centre. From Chako, turn left and travel a further two kilometers.
