A Chegutu policeman who allegedly shot and killed his colleague with his service rifle for reportedly sympathising with a woman who wanted to lay indecent assault charges against him has been arrested.
He was nabbed in Harare while trying to withdraw his July salary from a bank.
Police officers were paid on July 25, the same day that Constable Mindano Mindano was arrested.
Const Mindano, who went on the run after allegedly shooting his colleague, was arrested when he entered the bank to enquire why he was failing to access money from the Automated Teller Machine. Unbeknown to him, his ATM card had been disabled to facilitate his arrest.
His arrest led to the recovery of the service FN rifle in Chegutu where he had reportedly dumped it in a septic tank at Chegutu Showgrounds.
Mashonaland West police spokesperson Inspector Clemence Mabgweazara confirmed Mindano's arrest. He said investigations were in progress and Mindano was expected to appear in court soon.
"We can confirm that we have arrested Constable Mindano Mindano in connection with the cold blooded shooting of his colleague sometime last month," he said.
He was being accused of fondling the breasts and buttocks of a woman he met around Lowood Farm before attempting to rape her.
Const Mindano allegedly threatened to handcuff and shoot her if she resisted. However, she escaped and reported the matter. The matter was then discussed in the presence of his the leaders, Const Mindano and the now deceased, Const Chikava.
It was resolved that she should report the matter to the police.
This did not go down well with Const Mindano who felt his colleague had betrayed him.
He went on a binge with Blessed Mandere, a man from the community and returned around midnight and killed Const Chikava.
It is believed that Const Mindano disarmed Chikava before awakening him and shot him once on the right upper lip. The bullet ripped open the back of the skull and he died on the spot. Const Mindano fled the scene armed with the FN rifle Serial Number Z.R.P 10030 with 20 rounds and three magazines each and 20 rounds from Const Chikava's G3 rifle.
