A Midlands State University (MSU) student died upon admission to Gweru Provincial Hospital after she jumped from a moving vehicle in a suspected kidnapping attempt, police said.
The incident happened on Thursday around 12 noon along the Gweru-Shurugwi Road.
Police identified the 19-year-old student as Roseline Zvirikuzhe who was residing in Senga in Gweru.
Acting police spokesperson for Midlands Assistant Inspector Emmanuel Mahoko said Zvirikuzhe died after sustaining a deep cut on the head while trying to escape from the suspected kidnapper who was driving a white pick-up truck.
"It is alleged that the now deceased Zvirikuzhe, who was a student at MSU residing in Senga, was in the company of her friend, Ms Brenda Nyakamha of Old Highfields in Harare on the fateful day. The two boarded a white pick-up vehicle with a canopy intending to drop at Fletcher High School turn-off," said Asst Insp Mahoko.
"Upon approaching the Fletcher turn-off, the two ladies knocked the window of the truck's cab to remind the driver that they had arrived but the vehicle did not stop." Asst Insp Mahoko said the truck did not stop, neither did it reduce speed.
He said Zvirikuzhe then jumped from the moving truck, resulting in her sustaining a deep cut on her head.
"It is then that the vehicle slowed down a bit and the deceased's friend, Brenda, jumped off. Brenda did not sustain any injuries but the driver did not stop. Roseline was rushed to Gweru Provincial Hospital where she was pronounced dead upon arrival.
"The matter was reported to the police who attended to the scene and investigations are still under way," said Asst Insp Mahoko.
