A HARARE man is lucky to be alive after a gang of suspected armed men in Shurugwi waylaid and assaulted him before robbing him of cash and dumping him in a disused mine shaft.
The incident, which was confirmed by police on Friday, happened in Funhiro Village, Shurugwi, on Thursday at about 10.30pm.
Acting police spokesperson for Midlands province, Assistant Inspector Emmanuel Mahoko, said the man, Mr Godfrey Chidhakwa (39) of Damafalls, Harare, was coming from Funhiro Village going to Shurugwi Town when the gang pounced on him.
"It is alleged that Mr Chidhakwa was approached from behind by a gang of about 10 men. The gang threatened him with a knife, tied his hands and legs with a rope and assaulted him with sticks and a machete before they searched him and took cash amounting to $480. The gang then dumped Mr Chidhakwa in a mine pit left open by gold panners," he said.
Asst Insp Mahoko said Mr Chidhakwa managed to untie himself and reported the robbery to the police.
He said investigations were underway and two of the suspects have since been arrested.
"Most of the suspects are still at large. However, Mr Chidhakwa has so far managed to identify two suspects as Charuma and Paradza of Sebanga and Sebangwe Park in Shurugwi respectively," said Asst Insp Mahoko.
In a separate case, a 23-year-old Gokwe man was allegedly robbed of cash by two unknown assailants who were driving a taxi.
The incident happened on Thursday at about 3pm near Ivan How Mine turn-off along the Gokwe-Kwekwe road.
Asst Insp Mahoko said on the day in question the complainant, Mr Leroy Bhiza of Mapfungautsi suburb in Gokwe, was waiting for transport at Ivan How Mine turnoff when he was approached by the two men who were travelling in a taxi, silver in colour, whose registration number is ABN 2580.
One of the suspects came out of the car and hit Mr Bhiza with an empty bottle while the other man struck him with a small axe on the shoulder. They demanded cash and managed to get $240 from his wallet and drove off. The matter was reported to the police who attended to the scene. Mr Bhiza was referred to the hospital.
Investigations are in progress and the suspects are still at large.
"We are appealing to anyone with information that may lead to the arrest of these suspects to contact any nearest police station.
"Alternatively, they can use our suggestion boxes that are dotted throughout the country," he said.
