The Zimbabwe Department of Livestock and Veterinary Services has lifted with immediate effect the suspension on the importation of cattle, sheep and goat meat as well as live animals from South Africa.

The government suspended the importation of these on the 3rd of February this year following an outbreak of Rift Valley fever in the Eastern and Western Cape Provinces of South Africa.

Zimbabwean and South African health authorities say the disease has been closely monitored and controlled.

In a statement, the Acting Principal Director of the Department of Livestock and Veterinary Services, Mr. William Shereni, said the ban was a precautionary measure to stop the spread of the disease into Zimbabwe.
