A 37-year-old Bulawayo man allegedly teamed up with a girlfriend to severely assault his pregnant wife after she had asked for money to go to hospital.
Kholwani Ngwenya and his wife, Ms Nothando Ncube (21) are on separation.
It is alleged that Ms Ncube who now lives with her family in Makokoba went to her matrimonial house No 1166, 6th Street in the same suburb to ask for money from her husband Ngwenya to go to hospital for a check-up. She, however, found Ngwenya with another woman.
The two allegedly teamed up and started assaulting her until she collapsed.
Ngwenya and his girlfriend Princess Muvandi, whose age was not given, were yesterday arraigned before Bulawayo magistrate Mr Shepherd Mjanja to answer to charges of physical abuse in terms of the Domestic Violence Act.
Ngwenya faces two counts while Muvandi is charged with one. The pair will next appear in court on 16 August.
On the count they are jointly charged with, Ngwenya and Muvandi were granted $40 bail while Ngwenya was remanded in custody to the same date on the second count.
It is alleged that Ms Ncube went to the house on 6 August in the evening.
She knocked on the door and Ngwenya opened, but ordered her not to enter as he had a visitor, the court heard.
Ms Ncube forcibly entered the house and saw Muvandi sitting on the bed in the couple's bedroom and demanded to know who she was. This did not go down well with Ngwenya who allegedly started assaulting her with open hands.
Muvandi then allegedly joined in the assault and picked a coffee table, which she used to hit Ms Ncube on the face.
Ms Ncube allegedly fell down.
The court heard that Ngwenya continued to assault Ms Ncube who was now lying on the floor and kicked her several times in the stomach. She sustained a swollen face and bled from the mouth and nose.
Ms Ncube once again asked for money and Ngwenya continued to assault her with a waist belt all over the body and she sustained bruises.
She went back to her place of residence and was taken to the hospital where she was treated and discharged.
