A Chegutu man, Richmond Tumbare, who worked as security guard at a gold mine is battling for his life after he attempted to commit suicide by jumping into cyanide solution to avoid being arrested for allegedly stealing 150 kilogrammes of gold-loaded carbon.
Mashonaland West police spokesperson Inspector Clemence Mabgweazara said Tumbare was in a critical condition while his two accomplices were arrested. He said Tumbare was forcibly pulled out of the poisonous chemical after he refused assistance from police and workmates.
"They feigned beating Tumbare to hoodwink people into believing he had been robbed. They then hid the carbon in a bush." Insp Mabgweazara said Tumbare's accomplices - Isaac Chikuti (26) and Timothy Zinjacha (24) - returned to retrieve their stash on August 6.
"They, however, discovered their gold had disappeared and accusations flew between them, leading to the crime being exposed and their subsequent arrest.
"After the two were arrested, they told the court that they had connived with the security guard. "When Tumbare saw police officers approaching him at his workplace, he jumped into a tank full of cyanide solution.
"After a long struggle, he was eventually rescued. "Since the solution is poisonous, he was already in a critical condition when he was taken to Chegutu Hospital from where he was transferred to Harare Central Hospital."
