The life of a 32-year-old Sakubva woman has suddenly become a nightmare at the hands of her abusive HIV positive husband who kept his status a secret and is demanding unprotected sex from her.
Tambudzai Muwandi, the wife, who is HIV negative, last week chronicled her ordeal at the Mutare civil courts where she was applying for a protection order. Muwandi narrated how her husband of three years, Solomon Zvamunongoda kept his HIV status a secret until she gave birth to an unhealthy baby in 2009 who later passed on due to an undisclosed illness.
Since then, Muwandi said Zvamungongoda has been demanding unprotected sex from her and assaulting her during the process. She told Mutare provincial magistrate, Mr Alex Shumba that Zvamunongoda has been so violent and uncompromising such that she was now living in fear.
"I would want this court to offer me a protection order which must bar him from abusing me. I have been telling him to use condoms since he is HIV positive and I am HIV negative, but he has been assaulting me for suggesting such a preventive measure. Life has become so unbearable although he is my husband. He did not tell me that he is HIV positive until 19 October 2009 when I was about to give birth," said Muwandi.
She went on to say her baby died in the same month.
"He has been refusing to use protection, thereby exposing me to contracting the same disease. He also came to my workplace and urged my manager to sack me. My life has become so unbearable," she added.
Mr Shumba granted Muwandi's prayer and said that although the court does not directly interfere into the couple's bedroom affairs, he ordered Zvamunongoda to stop assaulting, insulting or harasing Muwandi, or else he would face arrest.
"We can't tell you on how you should sleep with your husband, but you (Zvamunongoda) should desist from assaulting, intimidating or harassing her otherwise you face arrest," said magistrate Shumba.
Zvamunongoda confirmed that he used to assault his wife, but denied that he was still into that habit.
"Yes, I used to beat her up several times, but I an a changed person now. I accept the court's ruling, but she should not take advantage of it," he said.
