President Robert Mugabe has appealed to Zimbabweans to remain focused and to jealously defend the country and its natural resources for the benefit of present and future generations.

Addressing thousands of people who gathered at the National Sports Stadium to commemorate Zimbabwe Defence Forces Day this Tuesday, President Mugabe said Zimbabweans should be wary of foreign forces that come as friends but having ulterior motives.

He commended the ZDF for defending the country against foreign aggression and thanked the people of Zimbabwe for resisting attempts by Britain and its allies to incite people to revolt against the government and effect regime change, through imposing illegal sanctions on the country.

The President said the defence forces are fully equipped to deal with any threats to the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the country, adding that the professionalism and determination displayed by the security forces has seen the country continue to actively participate in the United Nations peace keeping missions.

The 32nd anniversary of the Zimbabwe Defence Forces Day celebrations saw thousands turning up at the National Sports Stadium for the main commemorations.

Representatives of the military from some SADC states were also there to grace the occassion.

Among them was the Commander Defence Forces of Zambia, Lt General Paul Mihova and Namibia's military attachee in Zimbabwe, Col Sara Rwambali, who called on Zimbabweans to remain united and to respect the leaders of their defence forces in order to maintain peace and tranquillity required for national development.

"Zimbabweans should strive to maintain peace and stability for economic emancipation," said Lt General Mihova.

"I want to urge Zimbabweans to remain resilient in the face of adversities which are trying to derail their economic growth and national development," Col Rwambali said.

The ZDF Day celebrations are a time to show gratitude to the defence forces for the job they do in safeguarding and defending the country's independence, national sovereignty and territorial integrity.

The celebrations this year are being held under the theme, "Security and Stability Guaranteed for National Development," in view of the country's efforts aimed at economic emancipation.
