Four Muzarabani men were recently arrested following the death of a self-styled prophet whom they buried alive.
The fifth man, however, is still at large. He reportedly went into hiding after realising that the prophet whom they buried alive had eventually died.
The prophet died at the Muchengeti homestead in Headman's Mazonde under Chief Kasekete on 30 July where he had been invited to exorcise the homestead amid claims that goblins were causing havoc to the family.
Prophet Kanyama Shamiso (26), who was from Chikavacha village in the same area died after the 'miracles' that he wanted to perform allegedly botched. He was a member of Johane Masowe yeNguwo Tsvuku.
Acting police spokesperson for Mashonaland Central, Assistant Insector Petros Masikati, confirmed the incident and said police had arrested Michael Muchengeti, Learnmore Mutero (20), Tonderai Muswera (22) and Manasa Mutero (41). He said Nicholas Mutero (29) is still at large.
Allegations are that Madzibaba Kanyama had been invited by the Muchengeti family to exorcise their homestead after goblins had reportedly killed a number of people in their family. The ceremony had been scheduled to take place on the day a Memorial Service for one of the family members, Misheck Muchengeti, who recently died was to be conducted. Madzibaba Kanyama had alleged that he had the much needed supernatural powers to kill the troublesome goblins.
Prophet Kanyama and his colleagues spent the night at the memorial service and reportedly began the exorcising ceremony the following morning. They went to Mr Zvidzai Muchengeti's (78) homestead, who was Misheck's father. Reports say prophet Kanyama started accusing Sekuru Muchengeti of possessing goblins that were killing his children and causing havoc in their lives.
The prophet allegedly marked a spot where he ordered that a big grave be dug in the yard. Without wasting much time the grave was dug and was two metres wide and one metre deep. He began speaking in tongues together with his church members after which got into the grave, lied inside facing downwards and ordered people to fill up the grave with soil. The prophet had alleged that after 12 minutes, he would supernaturally come out of the grave.
After a heated debate over people should oblige to his request or not, five men allegedly agreed to make the prophet's wishes their command, and buried him alive. Upon waiting for more than 12 minutes without witnessing the 'miracle', the family members reportedly decided to undig the grave. They were, however, gripped with fear after realising that the prophet had not only stopped speaking in tongues, but had since breathed his last.
The matter was reported to Hoya police station and the four men who filled the grave with soil got arrested. Asst Insp Masikati said these four men are facing murder charges. He said it is still murder even if you assist a person who wants to commit suicide. He warned members of public not to be fooled by false prophets who fool them to enrich themselves
