Zanu-PF youth chairman for Harare province Jimu Kunaka was on Monday questioned by police over allegations of taking part in the shooting of municipal policemen demolishing illegal car sales. Kunaka and a woman identified as Mrs Midzi were questioned by detectives from the Criminal Investigations Department Law and Order Section at Harare Central Police Station who are investigating the matter.
Mrs Midzi is, however, not related to Zanu-PF chairman for Harare Province, Amos Midzi.
The incident occurred along Robert Mugabe Road in Eastlea, Harare last week.
Police were keen to interview Kunaka after there were reports that he could have masterminded the shootout.
A senior cop investigating the matter yesterday said: "Yesterday (Monday) we invited for questioning Kunaka and the other woman (Mrs Midzi) in connection with the case."
The senior cop said Kunaka told them that he was not there when the incident occurred.
However, Senior Assistant Commissioner Wayne Bvudzijena said: "We called in Jimu Kunaka for questioning yesterday (Monday) and investigations are still in progress."
According to police sources no arrests have been made and they are still investigating the case.
So far more than 20 municipal policemen have had their statements recorded by the police as investigations into the case continue. Police are mum on some people the municipal cops are implicating.
They are just confirming that a gunman recently fired two shots at Harare municipal police officers who were demolishing illegal car sales structures along Robert Mugabe Road in Eastlea, Harare.
Eight officers sustained head injuries and fractured limbs, while some lost varying amounts of cash when the man and his team pounced on the officers.
Council filed a police report CR number 73/8/12 at Rhodesville Police Station. Recently, Zanu-PF said it would investigate if there were some of its members who took part in the shooting.
Harare provincial party spokesperson Claudius Mutero said at the weekend that any member implicated would face disciplinary action.
Local Government, Rural and Urban Development Minister Ignatius Chombo said council has a right to demolish illegal structures.
Harare City Council embarked on a clean up campaign in the past two weeks, which involved demolishing illegal car sales that were sprouting in the city.
